We the undersigned petition Mole Valley District Council to refuse planning application MO/2018/0980 for retrospective demolition of the Royal Oak Kingston Road Leatherhead and building 20 flats for the following reasons including policy CS17 (3) Infrastructure, Services & Community Facilities - MVDC will resist loss of key services & facilities (including community facilities), unless an appropriate alternative is provided or, evidence is presented that the facility is no longer required and suitable alternative uses have been considered. This will require the developer to provide evidence that they have consulted with an appropriate range of service providers and the community where relevant". More details
Alternative community uses : eg. modern Medical/Community Centre/Nursery. Applicant has not looked at this at all – just wants housing. Just wants to build a block of flats make their profit and move on - as Cllr Tim Hall has commented. Out of keeping with the area – type, mix, design of housing. Mews style houses better? Quite a number of Victorian and older cottage style buildings in the immediate area. Evidence re. viability of pub questionable - appears to have been run down, mismanaged after 2013. Even if not viable, the demolished building could have been converted & included in redevelopment. Instead, demolished without planning consent. This was the only pub on North Leatherhead side of Kingston Rd bridge, as Cllr Joe Crome has noted an area of 3000+ people with very limited community facilities. The tiny facility offered is a late add-on to the residential development & possibly not even genuine. A local community charity has asked for bigger premises. The local GP practice in Leatherhead is seeking new bigger premises as Cllr Chris Hunt has noted.
